Well I'm the carrier of bad news Sad aparently on the last engine bay cleanup some water got inside the distributor, the car started and run fine for a while, but the water inside was grounding the coil to itself and it ended up frying it, new coil over here? U$S 261, but the car is running again Very Happy

I also got this on the mail

Its the Toyota Paseo Dome Light

and a preview of the next update

Little update, I just put the Paseo interior light. My mother 07' Corolla has it and I always found it very usefull. So measure twice, cut once, and it fits right in, all I have to do is the cableing

then I upgraded the rear speakers, I replaced the old original ones with an TS-M650PRO, I have another set for the front doors, but they are too big for them. Now im looking for a replacement

keeping with the audio, a friend of mine gave me this tweeters, he said "I have theese, I have them lying arround" they turned out to be Mark Levingson Tweeters from the Lexus Premium Audio Package

and lastly, this weekend I went with a friend to the beach. I did almost 800kmts (about 500miles) and it avegerd 13.1km/L or 31MPG

well I have news! not the good ones but news nonetheless. I wass driving, and sudenlly the car stops pulling... clutch in and the engine stalls, I stoped and try to start it and some knocking sounds, I pull the oil level and it was empty Sad

Yesterday I remove the oil pan and loose one main cap and...

The main bearing is toasted, and also three rods make "tac tac" sound, so the rod bearing should be in worst state. Tomorrow I will try to remove the engine and see what else is broken

I know the 2ZZ es better, but the 1ZZ is cheaper, it has more power vs the 4AFE, is lighter, I can buy parts over here without much fuzz, and it hasnt been done. But as I said it has been pushed back.

sorry for the lack of updates but a lot has happened

As you know I was driving and sudenly the engine lost all power and when I try to started, it sounded awefull. Given that it wasnt to get better by itself, we got to work.

Hello Forum Very Happy

loosing all the clips that hold the wiring.

I had already removed the downpipe to remove the oil pan to have a look inside, so I just removed the exahust manifold.

a little while later the A/C and alternator are out of the way

fighting with the PS Pump

a fight that the wrench wasnt able to handle

after that the last of mi friend arrived and moments after that we where lifting the head

removing the timing belt

removing the camshaft

the oil crust on allover the head was awful

with a little of love..

we had to asambly it again in order to remove it correctly

out with the camshafts

and with everything loose we proceed to remove the head

and away it goes

no... a hidden screw was still there

lets try again

now its free Very Happy

away from the motor that stood by her for 19 years

and its gone...

an engine powered by plutonium!

and what do you do when you dont have an engine lift?

you conveince your friends that is a great idea to remove it by hand

this character had ingested something strange (coffee)

ready

set

and out!

a little push/pull and the engine was away and on the grass

dirty Sad

but good overall

checking that everything was in good condition and it was truly great

checking that we didnt miss anything

putting everything where it belongs

you have to enjoy it

one last check and away we go

another little push and done

nice photo of the camshafts caps

we opend and what do we find?

nothing good

nothing good at all

main bearings

and you have to belive on my word that the rod bearings where useles because the photograper was kinda slow and didnt register.

Now we have a temporal jump, a few days come by and a friend of mine brought my fathers truck (00' 4Runner), we loaded everything on it and of we went to my parents house (60miles away) because over there I have more tools and space to work on the engine.

It was a saturday morning

reference pic

a while later this was it

all properly arranged

home made tool to remove the valve locks

the tool at work

working flawlessly

a while later...

and was coming from the head

the head was getting better

the remains of the exhaust valve seals

so the head needed a cleanup

and one by one all the valves

untill all of them looked great

the same with the head

random pic

and something like this was the result of 10 hours of work

after that I dismantle the head and cleaned all inside, luckly it was great inside

this was the bottom of the oil pan, I lost how many times I cleaned the oilpan but after all the cleaning you were able to eat inside of it.

when I finished with the oilpan I turned my atention to the block you also have to trust my word because I dont have any dirty pics but this is the aftermath

And another temporal jump, I have left the crank/rod/pistons on the rectifier that promised for monday, after that he promised it for the tuesday, and for wendsday and finaly he delivered on the thursday...

the assambly just arrived

the crust on the pistons...

after a little cleanup

a litle while later, lots of oil and I put the new bearings and mount the crank.

all the pistons after a little elbow grease

me and mine presision tools to put the oilpump seal

I don't have any pictures but a little effort and the engine is back on it engine bay.

The gearbox awaits

but first was the clutch

That same thursday the engine and gearbox went back to the engine bay, atached from the mountings. There was a problem with some shavings geting inside the new rod bearings and where new bearings where already damaged, I didnt want to risk an engine over a set of bearing so I bought a new set and proceed to asambly all the friday

Something like this was the engine

Some pictures are missing beacause I was working alone, this photos are around 3am

Not much after thoose photos the engine sparked to life again Very Happy 4am, just the exhaust mounted (the neighbours really happy) but the engine was runing great.

Saturday morning I proceed to buy the last part, the distributor o-ring, the original one exploded in 3 parts.

and was the first thing that was changed when I arrived

Checking and keeping an eye on everything

the faithfull partner that helped to bring the Corolla back to life

remember to enjoy it

a photo before hitting the streets

and to the streets we go!

I have covered like 1100kmts since then and no trouble at all, I did like 200kmts with and nobrand oil/fram filter, and then switch to the final oil (Motul 4100 15W50)/toyota oil filter, I also bleed the brakes and change the water to Toyota one

Thats all for now, till next time.

Well, luckly I have no more news of the car, I have done like 1000mi and the car is strong as ever.

And now an update that was missing, but an update nonetheless. A friend of mine told me that he had some tweeters, so given that I was starting with the car audio I couldnt miss the oportunity, I went to pick em up and this is what I find

Mark Levinson tweeter, that came with the Lexus Premium Audio

So I dismanteled my car, and dismanteled the tweeters and lets brake some stuff.

My faithfull "dremel"

Remember, meassure three times, cut once.

slow and steady

and done!

A little adjust was needed but the tweeter fit right on the cover, no glue needed.

not bad for a while of meassure and cuting

how they look on the car

Trully they sound awesome! I bought a JBL component and kept the tweeters and pluged this ones instead,

Not an interesting update but at least I keep the thread rolling. I leave you with this update that just came, so you know what I know "2013-10-25 13:13 / ARRIVED AT DESTINATION / Arrived to Uruguay"

PS: If anybody knows about a damaged or cheap 4AFE M/T ECM I'm still looking for one for my megasquirt project

lets keep on with this thread

After i had assambled the car it was working flawlessly, but after several milles I noticed that it was consuming oil and water, it wasnt leaking from anywere and also there was some brownish sludge forming on the radiator cap. So off went the head again, and here we go again with the help of a friend

after a while the head was off, and the head gasket was blown, sadly I dont have any picture of it.

but this time I was much neater, I had the head shaved (the guy told me it was bent), new head bolts, and a good head gasket (the first one was a peruan one that the guy told me it was great)

I dont have many pics, and the one I have are form the cellphone, some snaps to keep some documentation. When I was ready to pic the car up, I got there and found this

I whent to put the spare tire, and it was flat also... so I took the spare of a friend and took both wheels to repair.

On the other side, the battery was failing from time to time, and each time was geting harder to start the car, until one day it didnt want to start any more, of course, the day I asambled the engine, so... new batery.

After the car started, I did some short errands and put the car in the garage, the next day I took a small trip to a friends house (12mi) and when I got there, I turned off the engine and heard water boiling, I pop the hood only to find a crack in the radiator... so new radiator

A mod that I had in mind since I had the car, It was to put the diesel radiator because I knew that it was bigger and thicker, when i went to replace the radiator i found that the radiator that i had in place already was the diesel one, so now i'm stock again. 10 minutes under the rain and the new radiator was in place, so far, everything is great

and to and with this post, i think i had already posted that the suspension is beyond worn, I have a blown front strut and the rear ones are leaking, so... another dollars spent and I bought 4 new sachs struts, and 4 AG Progresive springs that lowers the car 1.8"

until next update.

double cheking with other forum i realized theat this update was missing. I had a noise that was coming from the rear, i was suspecting for the rear end-links, but after asking everywhere over here nobody had them, so I bought them in the US and had them shipped over here, I also bought the PCV and pcv gromet, here its the package from rockauto

Given that the weekend was nice we got together to dismantle cars

removing the wheel, everything was there luckly

an allen key and a 14mm wrench, and out with the old end-link, you have to trust me that it had a lot of play

a little of love and its done, its an easy job

general pic of the new and shiny part

To tell the truth, wasnt hoping that just the endlinks where the root of all the noises, for me there was something much bigger that was broken, but I started with the endlinks because they where cheap... luckly I was wrong and when the car returned to the strets was quiet as it should be.

I also had striped the bolt that holds the steering pump in place, so I drive some days without powersteering, but a new bolt and everything is working as it should

another update! this time I brought you... new rims! as I had told in the last post, I didnt like the previous rims, they vibrated on the highway, one was bent, another was leaking, and a previous patch on one of the rear tires also was leaking, so... another bit of money aaaaaaaaaaaaaand:

some more pics to ilustrate the thread. The rims are some chinse knock-off, and the tires are Dunlop Direzza DZ101 in 195/50R15

in the tire shop

at least the thread look nice

the rim+tire combo looks great!

installed on the car, with its new "river crossing" height

and from a diferent angle.

more updates soon!
